Oh wow, I had no clue about the Joffe film. I'll have to check it out. He's such a strange director. Like one masterpiece and a few good films and then 30 years of schlock. Like the Van Morrison of former Cannes festival darlings.
I love letters because as storytelling they don't require beginning/middle/end, have an implicit audience, and a form that anyone can understand and relate to. I don't know if younger people will embrace letter-writing in any mass mainstream way but maybe it could be a niche thing for weirdos and obsessives like movies or records are already.
This is the best book nook ever
Eeeerppp!!
loved this! especially the last part
Thanks, Lucy!
funny, i recently daydreamed about a solar flare catastrophe and a return to letter correspondence, maybe one day 🙏
For sure, Ivan. Or like late middle ages monks, copying out old manuscripts so the book can survive for another generation.
Really great Nook this week! I slapped my forehead at the Vatel bit (I haven't seen the Roland Joffé film where Depardieu plays him).

Ha! So true. Yeah, your retelling here makes me want to see it. I doubt it's played for tragically dark comic effect, but we'll see!
Roland Joffe also has a producer credit on Super Mario Brothers from 1993.
HA!

So true, Dmitry.
I loved reading this, Scott. I have always admired your eye and ear for literature.
Oh thanks so much, Sebastian. Feel the same way about you.
