Jarett Kobek on British Folk Horror, British sitcoms, American Sitcoms, and Sleigh-Johnson's new book 'CODE: DAMP: An Esoteric Guide to British Sitcoms.'
I decided that I wanted to read Happy Like Murderers despite (maybe because) Jarrett says not to but then I listened to a Fred and Rose podcast and decided Jarrett is probably very right
Loved this. Working for public broadcasting, we aired 'Britcoms' on Saturdays for many years and they were as popular (pre-Downton) as the mysteries. These two weren't among them, but Last of the Summer Wine, Are You Being Served, Vicar of Dibley, As Time Goes By, etc. If something went wrong with a broadcast, we heard about it.
I love reading books about horrible things. A while ago I asked Jarrett for true crime reccs, after reading his books about the zodiac killer (highly recommend). He told me about Happy Like Murderers with the caveat. I started reading it. It felt like torture. I finally realized I do not need to torture myself with a book and stopped like 2/3rds through.
"Don't read this" is not a cute little recommendation under the guise of a warning. Seriously, don't read this book. It will make you feel very bad.
This is great, Jarett.
